Roadless Rules: The Struggle for the Last Wild Forests (by Tom Turner, $55 hardcover, $27.50 paperback, Island Press, Feb. 2009): The roller-coaster stories of the struggles it took to get roadless areas officially protected are at once exciting, anxiety-inducing, and ultimately, hopeful. The Forester's Log: Musings From the Woods (by Mary Stuever, $25, University of New Mexico Press, Mar. 2009): A collection of almost 100 lively articles from the author's eponymous syndicated column.
