Costa Rica has been honored for its commitment to the environment. Recently, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) named Costa Rica as the first country to receive their Natural Biogem Award . The council is dedicated to protecting wildlife and wild places. Along with 12 other regions, Costa Rica was honored for its commitment to protecting the 500,000+ species of flora and fauna which inhabit the country and its goal to become the first carbon neutral country by 2021 . In 1979, Costa Rica declared 25% of its territory as environmentally protected areas. Today, Costa Rica is considered one of the most pristine places with 4% of the world’s biodiversity , 3.5% of the world’s marine life , 28+ national parks , reserves and wild refuges.
