Costa Rica has been honored for its commitment to the environment.  Recently, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) named Costa Rica as the first country to receive their Natural Biogem Award .  The council is dedicated to protecting wildlife and wild places. Along with 12 other regions, Costa Rica was honored for its commitment to protecting the 500,000+ species of flora and fauna which inhabit the country and its goal to become the first carbon neutral country by 2021 . In 1979, Costa Rica declared 25% of its territory as environmentally protected areas. Today, Costa Rica is considered one of the most pristine places with 4% of the world’s biodiversity , 3.5% of the world’s marine life , 28+ national parks , reserves and wild refuges. Says Maria Amalia Revelo, spokesperson, Costa Rica Tourist Board: “We feel honored to be recognized by the NRDC, not only because they are a leader in raising awareness for

the protection of our rich and natural environmental resources, but because they share our vision that it is important to do so for the future of the Earth and our children. Costa Rica and its citizens are very proud of what has been accomplished over the last 30 years and we hope to continue to work together with organizations like the NRDC to achieve a more aggressive plan for environmental protection and awareness.” For more info, check out the Costa Rica Tourist Board online.
